One Siege to Trade Them All

Marvel has announced that it will swap one free Siege #3 Deadpool Variant for 50 stripped covers - which adds up to roughly $200 - worth of DC Comics involved in the Lantern Promotional Rings promotion. If retailers respond, the barter value will give Marvel great fodder with which to promote Siege, at DC’s expense. The stunt is based on the fact that retailers were able to order the Rings, which were highly sought after, based on hitting incentive levels of the Blackest Night tie-in titles last November. The quantities sold of those titles went up dramatically, including a 5X multiple on the most-affected title. With from 28,000 to over 40,000 copies over the norm sold, Marvel is betting that a significant number of those books languish in retail stores with little expectation of ever being sold.

Sony gives Raimi, Maquire and Dunst the Ultimate Middle finger

Sony/Columbia is not pulling the plug on Spider-Man 4. The studio fired director Sam Raimi who has helmed all three of the highly successful Spider-Man films as well as Tobey Maguire, Kirsten Dunst and all the high priced talent in front of the camera. Variety is reporting that the studio, which could risk losing the rights to the Spider-Man character if it doesn't produce a new film, had a contingency plan in case of problems with the Raimi-helmed Spider-Man 4. The plan involves a “reboot” script by James Vanderbilt that takes Spidey back to high school in a version that will feature all new younger actors and cost the studio far less to produce. Avi Arad and Laura Ziskin, who have been involved in the production of all 3 Spider-Man movies, will be producing the new Spider-Man film. The new teenage Spider-Man movie is slated to debut in the summer of 2012.

Gumby Creator Art Clokey passed away on Friday, January 8th 2010 at the age of 88. The character was best known for the stop-motion-animated TV show, but it also inspired comics, including two Eisner Award winners. Clokey also created Davey and Goliath. Clokey created Gumby in the early 50s; the first exposure for the character was on the Howdy Doody Show. He voiced Gumby’s sidekick Pokey in some episodes.

Malkovich Seeing "Red"

John Malkovich has been cast in the feature film based on Wildstorm’s Red, according to Variety. He replaces John C. Reilly in the role of a paranoid ex-CIA agent who thinks everyone is out to kill him. The movie is set to debut on November 19th.

Kirby's Invalid

Marvel Worldwide Inc. has filed suit against the heirs of Jack Kirby, asking a judge to invalidate the copyright termination notices sent to Marvel and other companies. The copyright termination notices were the first salvo in a battle by Kirby’s heirs to gain control of Kirby’s works and characters. The suit just filed by Marvel argued that Kirby’s work for Marvel was “for hire,” which would make the heirs’ claims invalid.

Iron Man Armor

Marvel has revealed a new Iron Man armor, designed by writer Matt Fraction and Ryan Meinerding - the designer on the Iron Man and Thor films. The new armor will premiere in Invincible Iron Man #25, shipping in April. Fraction called the new armor “the next evolutionary step in the Iron Man design,” noting its aerodynamic and ergonomic qualities.

Gossip Lantern

Warner Bros. and director Martin Campbell found the female lead for the Green Lantern movie. Hal Jordan's lady love Carol Ferris will be played by Blake Lively, star of the CW's hit "Gossip Girl," The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants and its sequel. Ferris is the one who hires hot-shot test pilot Hal Jordan, played by Ryan Reynolds, to her father's aerospace company, which she's running, before he gets the ring to become Earth's Green Lantern. Carol later becomes the villain Star Sapphire, although there's no word whether there might be some hint of that in the first movie.

Bluewater Productions has announced Fame, a new ongoing comic series that will focus on “culturally relevant celebrities and other pop culture icons.” A preview issue featuring Lady GaGa will be released in time for Free Comic Book Day. Other celebrities up for the Fame bio treatment include Robert Pattinson, 50 Cent, David Beckham, and Taylor Swift.

Dune gets Taken

Pierre Morel, director of the 2009 hit "Taken", has signed a deal to direct a remake of Dune, according to Variety. Morel replaces Peter Berg, who had originally been working on a Dune pic, but change to directing to the Battleship film after the Writer's strike. The upcoming Dune film is reported to be a remake of The 1984 David Lynch Dune film instead of another treatment of the classic Frank Herbert novel.

Spider-Man vs Thor vs Release Date

According to several reports the shooting for Spider-man four has stopped to make changes to the script, which seems to put the May 6, 2011 release date in question. Never to let their traditional first week in july release date be lost, Marvel has change Thor's release date from May 20, 2011 to May 6th, 2011 which adds to the news of Spider-man 4's delay. Until the script improvements are finish no production has be schedule for Spider-man next movie while Thor continues to move forward.

Summer Hobbits

Looks like the work on the Hobbit script is just about done. According to, of all things, a tweet from Production Weekly, the production on the first Hobbit film is set to begin this June. It will take place in New Zealand and is expect to go on for 14 months. There's no word yet if they will be filming both versions back to back but if the movie is going to make it's 2011 release date then timing is going to be pretty tight.

Busting in 2011

Harold Ramis said in an interview that Ghostbusters 3 “is progressing with plans to shoot next summer and release in 2011.” The GB3 project will include much of the original cast as well as a new generation of younger Ghostbusters. Ramis also said “Dan Aykroyd did write a spec GB3 screenplay a few years ago, but no one was motivated to pursue it. Now, 25 years after the original, there seems to be some willingness to proceed and apparently a substantial public appetite for a sequel.”

House of Mouse and Spiders

Marvel stockholders approved The Walt Disney Company’s $4.3 billion acquisition of Marvel Entertainment. With Marvel honcho Isaac Perlmutter controlling 37% of Marvel stock, approval of the acquisition, which Perlmutter supported, was pretty much a foregone conclusion. Marvel stockholders will receive $30 in cash for every share of Marvel stock along with .745 shares of Disney stock for each Marvel share. Disney shares closed at $32.25 on Thursday. The deal brings Iron Man, Spider-Man, the X-Men and 5,000 other Marvel characters under the mouse house’s control. While some Hollywood insiders feel that Disney overpaid for Marvel since movie rights for Spider-Man, the X-Men, and The Fantastic Four are currently held by other studios, Disney has shown a great ability to develop properties and exploit them across a number of media platforms. The thought is that Disney can make waves with some of the more minor Marvel characters. The Disney XD cable channel, which targets tween boys and which the company is managing to place worldwide, is a natural point of synergy for Disney and its new acquisition.
