Canceled Universe

SyFy has canceled Stargate Universe, according to Deadline Hollywood. The remaining ten episodes of the show’s second season will be aired in the spring, with no more to follow. This apparently marks the end of the Stargate franchise, at least as far as series are concerned. The first series ran ten seasons; Stargate Atlantis was canceled after five seasons.

Make Mine CrossGen

Marvel will launch a new Crossgen imprint in March 2011, reviving two properties originally published by the shuttered publisher, Ruse and Sigil, with four-issue miniseries. Sigil #1 will be written by longtime comic writer Mike Crey, with pencils by Leonard Kirk. The cover will be by Jelena Kevic-Djurjevic, with a variant cover by Ed McGuinness. The T+ time travel epic will sell for $2.99. Ruse #1 will be written by Mark Waid, who recently went freelance after leaving his post as Chief Creative Officer for Boom! Studios, with art by Mirco Pierfederici. The cover is by Butch Guice and Mike Perkins, with a variant cover by Mitch Breitweiser. The T+ mystery series will also sell for $2.99.

Red & Dead Globes

Red, which is based on the comic book written by Warren Ellis and illustrated by Cully Hammer, received a surprise Golden Globe nomination in the “Best Motion Picture-Comedy or Musical" category. Produced by Summit Entertainment after Warner Bros. passed on the DC Comics controlled property, Red also surprised at the box office where it has earned nearly $90 million domestically and an additional $73 million overseas. The other comic book-based property to earn a nomination was Robert Kirkman’s The Walking Dead, which received a nomination in the “Best Television Series-Drama” category. After just six episodes, the zombie epic has established itself as one of the most highly-rated series on cable.

There’s No “John” In Iron Man

Jon Favreau has confirmed that he will not be directing Iron Man 3. The helmer of the first two highly successful Iron Man films responded to a number of Web stories with the following post on Twitter: “It’s true, I’m directing Magic Kingdom, not Iron Man 3. I had a great run with Marvel and wish them the best.” New York Magazine’s Vulture blog broke the news citing both confusion about the storyline for Iron Man 3 and the high cost of bringing Favreau back for a third film with Old Shellhead as possible reasons why Favreau was ankling the project. According to Vulture Favreau received $10 million for IM2 and would likely get between $12 and $15 million for IM3 along with gross profit participation. With star Downey, Jr. already getting a substantial cut of the gross, the price of bringing Favreau back might well have just been too high.

Phifer Gets Wood

American actor Mekhi Phifer (ER, Lie to Me) is joining the cast of the fourth season of the Doctor Who spin-off Torchwood, which is being co-produced by Starz and the BBC for a run on both networks. Phifer will be working with a trio of original cast members that includes John Barrowman, who plays the central role of con man Captain John Harkness, Eve Myles who portrays key team member Gwen Cooper, and Kai Owen who plays Gwen’s husband.

The Raven

The CW is looking to develop another TV series based on a DC Comics character. Diego Gutierrez, who was a producer on the revived science fiction series V, is writing the pilot for a new series based on Raven, the half-demon, teleporting empath who was created by George Perez and Marv Wolfman and who first appeared in DC Comics Presents #26 in 1980 and was a founding member of the Teen Titans.

Spider Parents

Peter Parker’s parents, who have rarely figured in the many Spider-Man comic book sagas and who have never made it to the silver screen, will make an appearance in the new Columbia reboot of the Spider-Man franchise directed by Marc Webb. Julianne Nicholson - Law and Order: Criminal Intent - and Campbell Scott - Royal Pains, Damages - will play the elder Parkers, though there is no indication yet whether they will appear in flashbacks, in some sort of a prologue, or during the course of the movie. Parker of course is an orphan who is raised by his Aunt May and Uncle Ben.

Dead to the Powers

Walking Dead executive producer and writer Charles Eglee is talking to FX and Sony about taking a similar role with the Powers series in development for the network, according to New York Magazine’s Vulture blog. The Powers pilot has been in the works for about a year, and Eglee’s interest dates back months, according to the report.

Waid Leaves Boom

Mark Waid is leaving his post as Chief Creative Officer of BOOM! Studios, the company announced today. Waid will continue to write three titles, Irredeemable, Incorruptible, and The Traveller (with Stan Lee), for BOOM! in a freelance capacity. BOOM! CEO Ross Richie wished Waid well. “Mark was key in BOOM!’s transition from a promising upstart to top tier publisher,” he said. “Now that we’ve reached this stage, Mark’s made it clear to me that he’s ready to take on new challenges. Anthology in Green

The next direct-to-DVD DC animated release after All-Star Superman, which is due out on February 22nd, is Green Lantern: Emerald Knights, which will be released on June 7th as part of the run-up to the June 17th release of the live-action Green Lantern movie on June 17th. Like Batman: Gotham Knights, which was released prior to The Dark Knight, Green Lantern: Emerald Knights will be an anthology film, with separate segments telling stories featuring various members of the Green Lantern Corps including Abin Sur, Sinestro, Kilowog, Mogo, and Rori Dag, all linked by a unifying theme.

#1 Superman

Superman: Earth One HC, which sold out quickly in the direct market, was the #1 graphic novel in the adult fiction category in bookstores in November, according to data compiled by Nielsen BookScan. Behind it, Scott Pilgrim, which we’ve started calling “the little graphic novel series that could” held tough at #2 and beyond, with four out of the top ten titles and all six volumes in the top 15.

Buffy, Not Written By Joss Whedon

Joss Whedon passed on writing the script for the new Buffy feature, according to a Hollywood Reporter story citing unnamed “studio insiders.” Whedon was offered the writing gig last year, according to the report, but turned it down to work on other projects, including Marvel’s Avengers feature. Whedon, who wrote the original 1992 film, had some fun with the planned reboot when it was announced last week. The studio leak about the Whedon offer was undoubtedly done to deflect criticism of the reboot from Whedon's loyal army of fans.

Swinging Spider

Spider-Man and Arachne (a new character created for the production) ended up dangling from wires for embarrassingly long periods in the first preview performance of Spider-Man: Turn off the Dark on Sunday, according to the New York Post. Those were only a few of the problems in the massively expensive production - now cited at $65 million in most reports - which is opening late and over budget.

Dead Ratings

Ratings on the fifth episode of AMC’s The Walking Dead, based on the Robert Kirkman graphic novel series, hit new highs, according to Hollywood Reporter. Around 5.5 million people watched the first airing of Episode 5, topping the 5.3 million that watched the first airing of the heavily hyped Halloween premiere.

A Date for Conan

The new Conan movie will premiere on August 19th, 2011, according to Variety. This puts it up against two other 3D films, Spy Kids 4 and Fright Night, in the battle for 3D screens. But Lionsgate hopes that it will see results similar to those for its feature The Expendables, which premiered in mid-August and has taking in over $100 million to date.

Die Spider-Man, Die

Marvel has announced that Brian Michael Bendis and Mark Millar will write the stories for its “Death of Spider-Man” event, a storyline starting in February in the Ultimate Comics universe. The storyline begins with a prelude in Ultimate Spider-Man #153, segues into Ultimate Avengers vs. New Ultimates #1 and continues in subsequent issues of both titles. Both books are rated T+ and retail for $3.99. Marvel says, “In the Ultimate Universe, there are no rules.” We’re not sure what that means, but we do know this storyline will get a lot of attention and press.

The Name of the Wolverine

Darren Aronofsky, who’s directing the new Wolverine movie has revealed that the film will be titled The Wolverine, and won’t be a sequel to the first, according to Hitfix (the first was titled X-Men Origins: Wolverine). Aronofsky described the film as a “one-off.” The storyline takes the title character to Japan, where he trains to perfect his skills in the martial arts (see “Wolverine 2 Script Done”). Production is expected to start in Japan early next year.

Friday Justice

Cartoon Network will air a one hour Young Justice special on Friday, November 26th, at 7 p.m. The show will introduce the property to Cartoon Network viewers; the new series will premiere in January.

Marketing Spider-Man Musical

Marketing for Spider-Man, Turn off the Dark, the new $60 million Broadway musical, is starting to gear up, with a photo spread in the December issue of Vogue and a promotional deal with Syfy. The premiere of the production has been delayed once again, this time to January, due in part to safety concerns related to the stunts, according to the New York Times. But visibility for the show will be high, as is necessary for the most expensive show in Broadway history.

Extras on the three DVD set will include a Season 1.0 recap; seven video blogs; podcasts with director David Eick and season stars Eric Stoltz, Magda Apanowicz, Esai Morales, and Sasha Roiz; and feature episode commentary with executive producer Kevin Murphy.

Casting the Bat

Director Christopher Nolan is casting The Dark Knight Rises, with six actresses currently up for two female leads, the Bruce Wayne love interest and an un-named villain, according to Deadline Hollywood. Christian Bale will reprise his role as Batman, and Tom Hardy will likely play a villain.

The 500 Simpsons

Already the longest-running animated program and prime-time entertainment show in TV history, The Simpsons was just renewed for its 23rd season this morning, which will take the show through its landmark 500th episode — leaving it third behind Gunsmoke (635) and Lassie (588) as the prime-time show with the most episodes ever produced. The renewal means The Simpsons will be on the air at least through spring of 2012, though producer Al Jean seems confident it will continue well beyond that, and is already planning episodes for a 24th season, where something happens.

Rise in the Knight

Director Christopher Nolan has begun revealing details on Batman 3, which starts shooting early next year. The title will be The Dark Knight Rises, and the villain will not be the Riddler, he told the L.A. Times Hero Complex blog. Nolan also revealed that the film will be shot with high def cameras with plans for an Imax release, and will not be 3D.

What Caprica Should Have Been in the First Place

Syfy has greenlit a two-hour pilot for a third Battlestar Galactica series from executive producer David Eick, Battlestar Galactica: Blood & Chrome. The new storyline will take place between the events in Caprica and the core Battlestar Galactica series, in the 10th year of the first Cylon War. It follows the adventures of the very young William Adama, a newly graduated pilot recently assigned to the Galactica. “Blood & Chrome will… return us to the authentic relentless depiction of combat and the agony and ecstasy of human-Cylon war, which was the hallmark of Battlestar Galactica’s early seasons,” Eick said of the new series.

The Rocky Horror Picture Remake

A remake of the cult hit movie Rocky Horror Picture Show is being developed by Fox 2000, with Glee creator Ryan Murphy one possibility to direct, according to Deadline Hollywood. Glee is running a Rocky Horror episode in which the cast performs the well-known Time Warp number next week. Rocky Horror, which was originally released in 1975, is still playing in midnight shows in some locales, and has a devoted fan following. It also was a merchandise driver, with a range of products appealing to those for whom the film’s edgy take on Frankenstein was a badge of hipness.

Disney Buys More Marvel

Disney has bought the distribution rights to The Avengers and Iron Man 3 from Paramount, effectively ending Paramount’s distribution deal for Marvel-produced movies early. The price was $115 million, an advance that could go up depending on the take from the two films. Paramount will distribute next year’s Captain America and Thor movies as planned, and will continue to have rights to Iron Man 1 and Iron Man 2. The pay TV deal for The Avengers will remain with Epix under Paramount’s existing arrangement. Disney Chairman Rich Ross said of the new arrangement, “Disney will… leverage these two highly-anticipated films across the multiple global platforms of the Walt Disney Company,” which we interpret to mean that Disney will now be able to double- and triple-dip on these films using Disney-owned channels, rather than just getting a fee from Paramount. Iron Man 3 has now been given a release date of May 13, 2013. Avengers is set for May 4, 2012.

Cloak, Dagger and Banner

Hulk is in development as a TV show for ABC, according to Hollywood Reporter, and a showrunner is being sought. Hulk’s been off TV since the hit 1978-82 show on CBS. Cloak & Dagger is in development as a possible show for ABC family, according to the same report, with a search for a writer underway. Both channels are owned by Marvel parent Disney, and are part of a push to develop shows based on Marvel properties under new Marvel TV head Jeph Loeb.

The Price of DC

DC Comics Co-Publishers Jim Lee and Dan Didio announced that, starting in January, the nation’s oldest comic book publisher would be reducing the cover prices of all standard length 32-page comics currently priced at $3.99 to $2.99. Didio noted that the price reduction was the result of listening to retailers and fans: “we listened to our fans and to our partners in the retail community who told us that a $3.99 price point for 32 pages was too expensive. Fans were becoming increasingly reluctant to sample new titles and long term fans were beginning to abandon titles and characters that they’d collected for years.

Expanding the Whedonverse

In 2011 Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season Nine debuts in mid-2011 it will be joined by a monthly Angel comic along with spin-offs featuring Willow and Spike. Additionally we are going to be picking up Dollhouse where it left off on the television show, starting as a mini-series.

New City Comicon Report

Attendance at New York Comic Con, which wrapped up Sunday, topped 95,000, according to Reed Group Vice President Lance Fensterman, with the caveat that the number could go up once all sales by retailers were tallied. All areas of the show were extremely busy, including the main show floor, the show floor that included Artists Alley, the Anime Artists Alley, the panel rooms, and traffic areas. Press attendance topped 2900, according to Fensterman, up 60% from last year’s 1800.

It sold out of single admission tickets for Saturday, October 9th, though single-day tickets still remained for Friday and Sunday, and a limited number of 3-day passes for the entire weekend show were available.

Lucasfilm has disclosed that the six Star Wars films will be released theatrically in 3D, beginning in 2012. The two-film series, which has not yet been greenlit but appears to be moving forward, is preparing to film in New Zealand, where a local guild is trying to get a contract with the production.
