#1 Superman

Superman: Earth One HC, which sold out quickly in the direct market, was the #1 graphic novel in the adult fiction category in bookstores in November, according to data compiled by Nielsen BookScan. Behind it, Scott Pilgrim, which we’ve started calling “the little graphic novel series that could” held tough at #2 and beyond, with four out of the top ten titles and all six volumes in the top 15.

Buffy, Not Written By Joss Whedon

Joss Whedon passed on writing the script for the new Buffy feature, according to a Hollywood Reporter story citing unnamed “studio insiders.” Whedon was offered the writing gig last year, according to the report, but turned it down to work on other projects, including Marvel’s Avengers feature. Whedon, who wrote the original 1992 film, had some fun with the planned reboot when it was announced last week. The studio leak about the Whedon offer was undoubtedly done to deflect criticism of the reboot from Whedon's loyal army of fans.

Swinging Spider

Spider-Man and Arachne (a new character created for the production) ended up dangling from wires for embarrassingly long periods in the first preview performance of Spider-Man: Turn off the Dark on Sunday, according to the New York Post. Those were only a few of the problems in the massively expensive production - now cited at $65 million in most reports - which is opening late and over budget.

Dead Ratings

Ratings on the fifth episode of AMC’s The Walking Dead, based on the Robert Kirkman graphic novel series, hit new highs, according to Hollywood Reporter. Around 5.5 million people watched the first airing of Episode 5, topping the 5.3 million that watched the first airing of the heavily hyped Halloween premiere.

A Date for Conan

The new Conan movie will premiere on August 19th, 2011, according to Variety. This puts it up against two other 3D films, Spy Kids 4 and Fright Night, in the battle for 3D screens. But Lionsgate hopes that it will see results similar to those for its feature The Expendables, which premiered in mid-August and has taking in over $100 million to date.

Die Spider-Man, Die

Marvel has announced that Brian Michael Bendis and Mark Millar will write the stories for its “Death of Spider-Man” event, a storyline starting in February in the Ultimate Comics universe. The storyline begins with a prelude in Ultimate Spider-Man #153, segues into Ultimate Avengers vs. New Ultimates #1 and continues in subsequent issues of both titles. Both books are rated T+ and retail for $3.99. Marvel says, “In the Ultimate Universe, there are no rules.” We’re not sure what that means, but we do know this storyline will get a lot of attention and press.

The Name of the Wolverine

Darren Aronofsky, who’s directing the new Wolverine movie has revealed that the film will be titled The Wolverine, and won’t be a sequel to the first, according to Hitfix (the first was titled X-Men Origins: Wolverine). Aronofsky described the film as a “one-off.” The storyline takes the title character to Japan, where he trains to perfect his skills in the martial arts (see “Wolverine 2 Script Done”). Production is expected to start in Japan early next year.

Friday Justice

Cartoon Network will air a one hour Young Justice special on Friday, November 26th, at 7 p.m. The show will introduce the property to Cartoon Network viewers; the new series will premiere in January.
