One Sexy Pussy

Anne Hathaway has been cast as Selina Kyle/Catwoman in The Dark Knight Rises, the third and last Christopher Nolan Batman film with Christian Bale, according to Variety. She has been rumored to be in the running for a major role in the film for months, but the specific role was unknown. Tom Hardy will play the villain Bane.

Super Bowl Heroes

Ads for comic-based movies will make a strong showing during the Super Bowl broadcast, with at least three already slotted, according to Hollywood Reporter. Comic-based films with spots planned include Thor, Captain America: The First Avenger, and Cowboys and Aliens.

Lantern Bad?

Back in November fan reaction to the first trailer for The Green Lantern was far from positive, but then the initial trailer for the first Iron Man film didn’t thrill anyone either and that film turned out to be a huge hit. But the recent comments of two anonymous Hollywood insiders, one a manager and the other an agent, who characterized the DC-based Warner Bros. tentpole as a “troubled production” and a “terrible movie,” spread across the Internet like wildfire. Is this fair, well no, but Warner Bros. may have some damage control to do here. It should be interesting to see what strategy the studio adopts in the run-up to the release of The Green Lantern on June 17th.

Give Me Another Red

Summit Entertainment has hired screenwriters Erich and Jon Hoeber to write the script for a sequel to Red, the action/comedy film which starred Bruce Willis, Morgan Freeman, Helen Mirren, and John Malkovich as former CIA agents, who are classified as “Retired, Extremely Dangerous.” Red, which was based on the comic book series written by Warren Ellis, illustrated by Cully Hammer and published by DC/Wildstorm, earned over $90 million at the North American box office and over $165 million worldwide.

Get Back to Winter You Damn Dirty Apes

Rise of the Apes, the Planet of the Apes prequel using CGI apes has been pushed back from June 2011 to November 23rd, according to Variety. The Rise of the Apes CGI work will be done by Peter Jackson’s WETA Digital.

Best In Capes

NBC’s superhero drama The Cape posted solid but not spectacular ratings in a two-hour debut on Sunday. Created by Tom Wheeler, The Cape is the saga of policeman-turned-Batman-like vigilante Vince Faraday, and it includes many standard superhero themes including a super-villain antagonist known as Chess. The Cape managed to post a 2.6/6 rating in the critical 18-49 demographic, which was good enough for second place with male viewers over its two-hour time period.

Hotties in the Knight

A number of prominent young actresses including Keira Knightley, Jessica Biel, Gemma Arterton (Prince of Persia), Kate Mara (Brittany in Entourage), Naomi Watts and Anne Hathaway are vying for two key female roles in Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight Rises. Reports indicate that one of the roles is that of Talia, the estranged daughter of Ra’s Al Ghul. In the comics Talia is a complex character who is neither a heroine nor a villain. She is Batman’s lover and the mother Damian Wayne, the fifth Robin.

Howell in The Spider

Although it is already in production, Marc Webb’s reboot of Spider-Man continues to add cast members. The latest announcement involves 1980s child star C. Thomas Howell, who has joined a cast that includes Andrew Garfield, Emma Stone, Rhys Ifans, Martin Sheen, Sally Field, and Irrfan Khan.

Bringing Back the Thunderbirds

Gerry Anderson told fan site Fanderson that he will produce a new TV series based on Thunderbirds, the cult “Supermarionation” UK series from the sixties. While not as big in the U.S. as it was in the UK, the series has a following worldwide. Anderson reportedly told the BBC, "I don't want to sound conceited, but because I'm going to make it...I'm confident that it will be a smash hit!" Jerry Anderson is a British publisher, producer, director and writer, famous for Thunderbirds, Space: 1999.

Edgar and Pym

Edgar Wright, of Scott Pilgrim fame, has turned to the business of rewriting Ant-Man, according to the Los Angeles Times. Wright previously wrote one draft of the script, and has at various times expressed his continuing interest in the property, but has been busy doing other things. This is the first time he’s done any work on Ant-Man since he started developing Scott Pilgrim, according to the report

Red Lantern

DC has announced that it will launch an ongoing Red Lantern comic series, to be written by Peter Milligan, in 2011. Red Lantern will build on concepts introduced in the core Green Lantern series by DC CCO Geoff Johns, who asked Milligan to write the book.

McG Ouija

Director McG is being signed to direct Ouija, based on the Hasbro game, and production will begin later this year, according to Variety, which describes the film as a “supernatural action adventure.” The release date has been set as November 12, 2012.

Directing Godzilla

Godzilla has a director. Gareth Edwards, the British filmmaker who wrote and directed indie sci-fi movie Monsters, is closing a deal to develop and direct the creature feature for Legendary Pictures, the company that co-produced blockbusters such as Inception and The Dark Knight. Warner Bros. will co-produce, co-finance and distribute per its deal with Legendary. Legendary's Thomas Tull and Jon Jashni are producing along with Dan Lin, Roy Lee, and Brian Rogers. Legendary picked up the rights to the giant lizard from Japan’s Toho Co. in March 2010. It was around that time that Edwards’ Monsters made its premiere at SXSW before moving on to the Toronto International Film Festival and a U.S. release by Magnet Releasing in October.

Marvels New EIC

Marvel has announced that Axel Alonso will be the new Editor-In-Chief of Marvel Entertainment, reporting to Publisher and President of Print, Animation, and Digital Divisions, Dan Buckley.
