Secret Spensor

Fantastic Spider-Man

Spider-Man is joining the Fantastic Four. In the wake of last month's death of the Fantastic Four mainstay, Marvel Comics is filling the void on the First Family of Comics with its most popular super hero as the publisher reboots the team next month. "Spidey has a long standing relationship with the Fantastic Four that we've seen over the years and he was Johnny Storm's closest superhero friend or bitterest superhero rival -- depending on what day of the week it happened to be," says Tom Brevoort, Marvel's senior vice president of publishing.

Final Lex

"Smallville's" favorite baddie will return for the series finale. Michael Rosenbaum, who played Clark Kent's friend-turned-enemy Lex Luthor in The CW show, is reprising his role for the last time on May 13. "I'm delighted to return for the series finale. I'm simply doing it for all the fans out there who made Smallville the great success it is. I appreciate all of their passion, their relentlessness and even their threats. Ha ha," Rosenbaum quipped. "I can't wait to hug the old crew back in Vancouver one last time and see all of my old friends once again. Oh, and for Lex to become the badass he's destined to be."

Assisting the Fury

The search for Lois Lane is not the only casting contest that is capturing the attention of Hollywood actresses, the prized role of Nick Fury’s assistant in the upcoming superhero ensemble film The Avengers directed by Joss Whedon is attracting some of Tinseltown’s top female talent. At stake is a deal with nine-picture option, and according to Heat Vision, the short list includes V star Morena Baccarin as well as Jessica Lucas, Cobie Smulders, and Mary Elizabeth Winstead.

Movie Vice

Producer Andrew Lazar (Jonah Hex, Get Smart) is joining forces with Platinum Studios (Cowboys & Aliens) and Top Cow Productions to adapt the Top Cow comic book Vice into a live-action feature film. The five-issue Vice comic book series was created by Matt Hawkins and published by Top Cow in 2005 and 2006. Vice follows the adventures of a group of teenage criminals who agree to aid the FBI in return for the cleansing of their considerable rap sheets.

Marvel's Digital Chrome

Marvel Entertainment has announced Marvel Comics on Chrome, a free app available via Google’s Chrome Web store. The app is optimized for the Google Chrome browser (which potential users must download first) and offers 1,600 comics for single issue purchase to read on a PC or Mac. Purchases made on the Marvel Comics app on iTunes will also be accessible via the Chrome store at no extra cost to users, though purchases made through the Chrome store may only be viewed through the Marvel app on Chrome.

The Perfect Lois

A number of actresses are competing for the role of the Daily Planet’s second most famous reporter in the new Superman film being directed by Zack Snyder. With a release date of December 2012, there is an urgency to the casting of the film, which will likely require lots of time-consuming post-production special effects. According to the Hollywood Insider, five actresses either read for or have been asked to read for the part including Jessica Biel (Blade Trinity), Kristen Stewart (Twilight), Malin Akerman (Watchmen), Dianna Agron (Glee), and Rachel McAdams (Sherlock Holmes).

Levitt in Talk for a Knight

Joseph Gordon-Levitt, who played a key role in Christopher Nolan’s Inception, is in talks to join the cast the The Dark Knight Rises, the final film in Nolan’s Batman trilogy. Nolan is set to begin filming Dark Knight Rises in early May. According to Deadline, there is no word on what role Gordon-Levitt will play, though the smart money is on the impish actor playing "The Riddler."

Suck My App, Apple

In a move that has definite ramifications for the world of digital comics, Apple has rejected Sony’s iPhone application, which would have allowed customers to buy and read content from the Sony Reader Store without giving them the chance to purchase the same material through Apple’s iTunes store. Although an article in the New York Times gave the impression that all content for iOS devices would have to flow through the iTunes store, Digital Daily quoted Apple spokesperson Trudy Miller who clarified the situation: “We are now requiring that if an app offers customers the ability to purchase books outside of the app, that the same option is available to customers from within the app with an in-app purchase.” So it appears that customers won’t have to purchase all their iOS content from Apple, but app developers will have to offer consumers the option to buy through iTunes or face having their app rejected.

Stand and Deliver

Stephen King’s post-apocalyptic horror classic The Stand is heading to the big screen as Warner Bros. and CBS films have joined forces to create a tentpole film based on the novel that was originally published in 1978. King revised and expanded his “good vs. evil” saga about an America ravaged by a deadly flu virus known as "Captain Trips" that wipes out most of its population in a new edition in 1990.

Zack Snyder's SUPERMAN reboot has found its Man of Steel in Henry Cavill, according to Deadline. The website reports that THE TUDORS actor has long been the front-runner for the role, but the decision was only made in recent days.

The Admiral Gets An Actor

Luke Pasqualino has been cast as the key character of the young William Adama in Syfy’s upcoming Battlestar Galactica: Blood & Chrome series, according to EW. The character is a young fighter pilot whose age is between the child Adama in the recently canceled Caprica and the older Adama played by Edward James Olmos in Battlestar Galactica.

Three Writers @ the Movies

Three comic book-based projects took their initial steps toward development as writers were assigned to develop screenplays for War Machine, Brodie’s Law, and Ascend. Actor Don Cheadle, who played War Machine in Iron Man 2, told MTV that a writer had been hired to create a War Machine screenplay, though he didn’t reveal who the writer is.Gary Young, who wrote the screenplay for Harry Brown, has signed on to adapt Daley Osiyemi and David Bircham’s Brodie’s Law. And, Gregory Widen, the creator of The Highlander franchise, will adapt Keith Arem’s Ascend for the big screen.

The Wizard’s Off to See the Reaper

A spokesperson for Wizard World PR has confirmed that earlier online reports of the demise of the print and paper incarnations of Wizard and ToyFare were correct. Wizard World, Inc., a newly formed public corporation headed by Wizard magazine founder Gareb Shamus will begin the production of an online Wizard World publication in February as well as continue to manage the full slate of Wizard World Tour conventions.

Series Suicide

IDW Publishing will launch a comic miniseries based on SuicideGirls, the subscription Website and merchandise featuring nude photos of models with “alternative beauty” - like tattoos and piercings, in March. The series is being created under the direction of SuicideGirls co-founder Missy Suicide. It will be plotted by Suicide, Steve Niles and writer/actress Brea Grant, written by Grant, with art by David Hahn. Cameron Stewart will contribute the covers and mini-historical tales of the SuicideGirls in each issue. Variant covers will feature photos of the SuicideGirls models.

NBC & Wonder G

The new Wonder Woman TV series from showrunner David E. Kelley will air on NBC, according to Deadline Hollywood.. Joseph McGinty Nichol, aka McG, is reportedly the odds on favorite to direct the pilot for the newly greenlit NBC Wonder Woman series being developed by David E. Kelley. McG has demonstrated some prowess with booty-kicking female protagonists—he directed the two Charlie’s Angels movies. McG has directed several TV pilots including initial efforts for Chuck and Fastlane, though both of those projects were developed by McG’s production company, Wonderland Sound and Vision.
